About DAIWB

Looking back to the history of diabetes management in India, Calcutta was the pioneer city and presumably Asian subcontinent where first Diabetic clinic was established. Dr. J.P Bose, the renowned physician of the time set up the Diabetic Clinic in Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine in the year 1923, just 2 year after the discovery of insulin by Banting and Best. Credit of injecting insulin first in India also goes to the dedicated researcher Dr. J.P Bose when 12 year old Kumudini suffering from Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus recovered dramatically after receiving insulin. Tradition of management of diabetes was maintained by many renowned physicians who followed his footsteps. The increasing number of diabetes patients necessitated more focused approach and many new diabetes clinics developed. Along with this, two new Diabetes organizations merged in the city, Diabetic Association of India, West Bengal and Juvenile Diabetes Foundation who simultaneously worked on diabetes awareness. Professor M.K Chhetri took the lead in laying the foundation stone along with Professor G.C Mukherjee, Professor B.R Sengupta, Professor B. Sadhukhan, Professor S. Kumar, Professor N.K Majumdar and Professor T.K Biswas with a mission of increasing awareness about diabetes among patients with diabetes and their family members, population at risk of diabetes as well as health care workers. The organization gradually grew up with increasing number of members. In the year 1993, the association became autonomous and continued to focus on patient care and academic activities relentlessly.
